Let me explain: My sister-in-law, Jennifer (or as we call her, “Gigi”), is having a baby in a few months, and we are throwing a baby shower for her next weekend. Gigi’s husband, Andrew, is a journalist and often writes about Africa. To reflect this part of their lives, the baby shower is going to have an “African jungle” theme. Fun!
As a decoration for the shower, I’m working on a Jungle Diaper Cake. If you haven’t seen a diaper cake before, here is a picture of one that I made for my friend Laura when she was pregnant with a baby girl. (If you are wondering … diaper cakes are not edible, much to John’s dismay.)
As you can see in the picture, a diaper cake is a tiered structure made of rolled and stacked diapers, and decorated with bows and various baby things. They are a lot of fun to make and always appreciated by the new mom … if you want to give it a try, step-by-step instructions are provided below.
Step One: Get your supplies. Here is a list of what you will need:
Step Two: Roll up each diaper and secure with a rubber band around the center. Working with one rolled diaper at a time, stand it vertically on one of the foam circles. Then insert a skewer through the center of the roll, down through the foam circle — this will hold the diaper in place. Here are pictures of what the bottom layer will look like as you are working on it and then when finished:
Step Three: When you finish the first layer, just repeat the same thing for the second and third layers. Then, tie a piece of wire ribbon around the outside of the diapers — the ribbon will hide the rubber bands and also help to hold the diapers in place.
Step Four: Place the second layer on top of the first, and the third on top of the second. To hold each layer in place, press a few skewers through the foam between each layer.
