Gift Idea for New Mom

Jenna, my best friend growing up, just had her second baby.  That’s us in the pic below, circa 1987 or so.

I haven’t talked to her yet, but I can imagine that she is — in equal parts — thrilled, overwhelmed, and exhausted.  (And that pretty much sums up motherhood, doesn’t it?)  A mutual friend set up a care calendar for her — have you heard of these?  They’re a web-based way to organize meals for families during life-changing events, like the birth of a new baby.  John and I are going to sign up for a meal or two.  And in the meantime, because mom’s needs are usually at the bottom of the priority list after a new baby is born, I wanted to do something for Jenna that is all about HER.  This is what I came up with.

It’s a gift basket of things I think she will enjoy.

Lots of fresh fruit — for when she needs a snack on the go.

A box of Earl Grey.  She loves to make homemade spiced tea.

A soft little puppy for baby.

Lavender bath and shower gel.  The scent is good for the soul.

A box of snacks for her toddler, and a stack of (ahem) very important news magazines for her to read while baby is sleeping.

(Of course Jack got a little territorial when he found his favorite bunny cookies in the basket.  Fortunately I had purchased a second box.)

Some healthy bite-sized snacks.  No cooking required.

Homemade candied roasted nuts and chocolate covered almonds.

A package of simple cotton one-sies.  So she can put off laundry one more day :)

What was your favorite thing to receive as a new mom?  I’d love some more ideas — as another dear friend is due tomorrow!

Oatmeal! With a one-month old I have quickly realized that making sure I get a good breakfast makes a big difference (and even read oatmeal encourages your milk supply, if breastfeeding). Make sure it’s something she can just add water/ milk to. I actually add almond butter but hey, that’s one of my crazy cravings! I also have a friend due soon so will use this great gift idea! Thank you Marie :)

Congratulations Shannon! What a great suggestion! I am such an oatmeal girl; the best days for me start with a big bowl of hot cereal with brown sugar and cream. I’m also a big fan of almond butter…such an easy way to get protein. I have not tried it in oatmeal yet, but do love it with an apple or banana! And I plan to add both to my next basket! Thanks Shannon :) Stay in touch and best wishes to you and your new baby. Lots of love.
